Cutting your dog’s hair for the first time can be a chore. In order to be successful, you’ll want to know how to treat your dog so that the clipping goes smoothly. Before you even start the clipping process, the dog must have all tangles and mats brushed out completely. By doing this, it will make the job a lot easier.

Preparing the Job

The clippers are in your hands and your dog is patiently waiting. Now, you’re probably wondering what you should do while the clippers are running. Here are some tips that you can use:

  • Try your best to purchase a pair of clippers that don’t create a lot of sound. Dogs are often scared by loud clippers.
  • Be sure to research the breed you own. Each and every breed will have to be clipped a certain way.
  • Clipping should be done on a regular basis. If possible, start clipping when your dog is older than eight weeks old.
  • If you’re completely unsure how the dog’s coat should be groomed, consider meeting with a professional groomer.

Being Safe with the Clippers

When using the clippers, here are some safety guidelines that must be followed:

  1. Always use the lubricant that comes with the clippers. The lubricant on the blades will prevent the clippers from getting too hot. If you use the clippers for a long time, the warmth created from the blades can often burn your dog’s skin. This is something that they won’t forget!
  2. Purchase a blade that is designed for the breed you own. To achieve the best results, consult with a breeder or research online.
  3. Be sure to sharpen the clippers before each use. Dull blades can pull hair often causing discomfort for your dog.

Before the clippers are even turned on, make sure that your dog is free and clear of any tangles. When holding the clippers, just make sure that the clippers feel comfortable in your hand when running it over your dog’s coat.

The best way to use the clippers for the first time is by finding an area that has been trimmed in the past. Take a little section and proceed to trim it up a little bit. By doing this, it will give you a good idea how much of the blade you’ll have to take off. Adjusting the blade can help with the hair length. The higher the blade number is, the shorter the cut will be.
